"You saved my sister's life..."
A story from Mr. P, who volunteers at the Family Shelter in our Children's Services
Yesterday evening a young lad (age six years) and his aunt and uncle came into my office as I was leaving. The boy handed me an envelope that contained money and a check for $100. The young man had saved the money (doing chores) and wanted to donate it to the Children's Program as a token of thanks for what the Interfaith Shelter had done for him and his mum four years ago.
The $100 check from his aunt and uncle was donated also to give thanks for the kindness shown to the boy and his mother. As the aunt put it, ‘You saved my sister's life, you took her off the street and gave her and her son a home.’ The boy's aunt and uncle also volunteered to 'adopt' a family at the shelter.
The world really is full of good and decent people.
It is a daunting task to rise above the grips of homelessness. One of the chief goals of the Interfaith Association is to provide assistance and encourage a successful transition into stable, permanent housing. Read about some of our families’ journeys here.
Our families succeed because of their own persistent efforts aided by community involvement, partnerships, and contributions of volunteers, goods and financing. We’ve seen some truly remarkable transformations take place within and beyond our walls.
