Volunteer

We are currently accepting individuals and groups of volunteers in many fields of expertise who feel led to use their gifts, talents and abilities to assist individuals and families who benefit from our various programs.

Advisory Committee Members needed: In our continuing efforts to increase opportunities for community members to offer their skills and expertise for Interfaith efforts, we are initiating Advisory Committees to our Board. We will start with 3 committees and build from there. The Advisory Committees will be "Shelter Facility," "Fund Development," and "Interfaith Connections." (This last committee will focus on increasing understanding among faith groups as well as seeking grant support through faith-based source). Since this is a newly-added structure, the descriptions/names of the committees may change but the focus of each initial committee will remain the same.

Other ways you can volunteer your time:

  1. Case Manager Assistants
Provide assistance with problem solving, goal setting and personal financial management. Some case management experience is required.
  2. Homework Helper
Assist resident children with homework after school. This is an excellent opportunity for high school students, former teachers, moms, dads, anyone! This is a fun and rewarding volunteer position that requires basic skills to assist with subjects like math, English and science. Schedules are very flexible.
  3. Children's Activities
Come and share your skills! Whether you prefer arts and crafts, singing and dancing, or quiet reading time, your skills are needed! There are also special holiday-time projects and activities. This is a great way to offer your kindness and compassion, while letting that inner child out! Flexible schedule.
  4. Community Meals
This is a great opportunity for families, church groups, and work teams to get out and make a difference. Volunteers are invited to share in our in-house community meals through a variety of means, including donation of food, preparation, serving, sharing, and clean up. Your group can commit to bringing and preparing dinner one night a month! An ongoing commitment is not required, but encouraged!
  5. Learning Hour
We are looking for motivated and energetic people to teach life skills classes to kids. From essay writing for teenagers, to dancing for toddlers, your skills are needed! We are also interested in art therapy instructors, basic math instructors, etc. Bring your skills and talents to the table, and we will find a niche for you here! This is an on-going commitment.
  6. Adopt-a-Family
This is a great opportunity to help out a family who is exiting the shelter. As the families leave, they often move into their own houses or apartments. When you adopt an exiting family, you have the opportunity to help them by donating dishes, furniture, and other household items. The guests take comfort in knowing their community is pitching in to help them make this difficult transition. This can be a one time or ongoing experience for families, groups, or individuals.
  7. Adopt a Room
This is one of our most impactful programs for our incoming families. When a family first arrives, it is wonderful for them to find comfort in a nice warm bed and a cozy room. Decorate and maintain one of our ten sleeping rooms for an on-going period or on an as-needed basis. Decorating the room can involve painting, hanging pictures, donating bedding, etc. This is a great opportunity for families or other small groups.
  8. Shelter Coordinator Assistant
Help with coordinating volunteer activities, sort and store donations of food, clothing, and other materials, and take inventory as needed. Help with organizing kitchen supplies and foodstuffs. Organizational skills are a plus! Time commitments vary.
  9. Cooks and Kitchen Helpers
From helping prepare meals, to helping think up new, creative and healthy recipes, your kitchen skills are needed! This is an excellent opportunity for Nutrition Students needing volunteer hours, or for individuals who want to give back in a kitchen setting. Schedules are flexible and vary.
  10. Handyman or Handywoman
Provide basic maintenance and repair work around our building with skills such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical, or yard and garden work.
  11. Holiday Activities Coordinator
We need some motivated and organized individuals for planning, coordinating, and executing holiday activities. We get incredibly busy around the November and December holidays and could benefit from help with all of the incoming donations and activities! We will be accepting applications for this position all year, and we be especially needing the holiday help in the months of November and December. Qualified volunteers will be motivated, with a desire for a weekly or twice weekly commitment in the needed months.
  12. Gardening
Help with the Shelter Garden, plant, weed, harvest, cook.
